Bought vegas after spending 3months,getting beaten up by pinnacle studio 10,after so many crashes, patches, updates, installs reinstalls,,my system is a mess, I got plantinun installed, but as it opens an error pops up stating an undetermined error has occurred, and when you try to open any video files the access violation message comes and it locks up,Im semi-literate on a computer but sonys tech guy gave me about 20 different reasons why that particular event might happen, some things Ive been able to check, cpu temp seems to be okay 48c and mid 50's with a load, bought registry mechanic, cleaned up the registry, checked the memory, fine, the tech says its a kernal 32 error iI checked the device drivers thru device manager and it says theyre the best available for the device, there a few that are beyond my capabilities, such asDamaged swap file ,File allocation damage, Damaged or incorrect version of the kernel32.dll file ,BIOS settings for Wait states, RAM timing, or other BIOS settings, Damaged or incorrectly installed third-party softwaredll, files that are saved to the desktop
, Non-existent or broken Temp folder ,Damaged control panel (.cpl) file, Damaged Java Machine ,Damaged .log files ,Damaged entries in the History folder, Incompatible or damaged dynamic link library files ,Damaged or incorrect Msinfo32.exe file ,after dealing with pi nnacle, I was pretty stoked about vegas and I really want to get up and running Im wondering if I shoul just install win xp again and start over, would a repair install fix my problems, or do a clean one? One other problem I used to have smartsound quicktracks plugin on my computer, with studio 10, it wont uninstall, gets half waydone and then stops,a nd in conjunction with that whenever I run registry mechanic that plgin pops up and windows try to install it even though I ve deleted everthing I could find relating to it, any help or advice would be appreciated i m using an amd xp 3000, 2.16 ghz, 1125 ram two hd c 70 gb 35 free,2nd 120 gb 115 free

Wow - it seems you've been throught it. I had Pinnacle and the thing would not uninstall off my computer without a serious fight - including changing the registry and doing a selective startup.

Have you tried a restore?

I would say for you - with all the additional damage to the registry and files - not to mention all the hidden crap that gets laid down by some programs - it may be time to play Taps. You may save yourself a considerable number of hair folicles and time to just do a reformat of your hard drive and start over. Hopefully you can archive any important material onto a cd or dvd before you do it.

Perhaps you already know this or have learned the hard way - setting a restore point before you install any software is a good idea and can be a real lifesaver when things go bad.

The good news is that you will love Vegas Movie Studio Platinum. There is a long list of people just like you that have discovered the stability, flexibility and power the program has. The forum is a great source of information as well. Good luck with whatever way you choose to fix your problem.

I have no advice, but I have a request: when you get it to work, post the solution here.

Don't know what software is giving you that comprehensive an error listing, but it appears to be indicative of a huge mess. I'm not a big believer in the necessity of reinstalling the O/S at the drop of a hat, but I think that'd be my choice in your circumstances. (assuming that System Restore didn't help)

A repair install might fix you up, but, if you don't have too much software to reinstall or much data to lose, I'd think seriously about doing a fresh install.

I'm going to parrot what has been said so far. Format your C: drive and reinstall windows. I had a hardware issue last fall, where something inside my computer was dying. In trying to diagnose many random events, I opened a case with Microsoft. One of the things I learned is that even M$ tech support will lead you to a point where the only viable option is to reinstall (and they expect/recommend you do so at least yearly). And don't forget to format!

It sounds like they are tying to get away from the fact that you would have to reinstall your OS so often in Vista, but I will believe it when I see it. On the plus side, if you get organized with your programs and data, it will not take that long to do the full reinstall and it will leave you with a faster machine.
