Vegas can do it. You just need to render out to a format that supports Alpha Channel. Uncompressed AVI will if you go into the Custom settings and check the Alpha Channel checkbox. Several quicktime formats do as well. Pick the format that works best for you.

Thanks Edward.
Will try that.
Think of you whenever I use Excalibur, and that is every time I edit, and that is just about every day!

Don't see any "alpha" setting, under custom settings.
What am I overlooking?

Render as AVI - Default Template (uncompressed).
Custom - Video Tab - click the "Render alpha channel" box.

Can't go that way Mike, as they are cutting on FCP.
They want .MOV or MXF file w/alpha channel.
.MOV won't render at all.

Rendering out now to Sony MXF.
Chose alpha channel "straight (unmatted)" w/right click in each event.

May render out to mp4, if all else fails.
It's a container for MAC's H264 as I recall, and should work at their end.

Dan, with all due respect, that's the kind of information that should have been stated in the first post.

You're right.
Too close to the chalkboard I suppose.

add alpha channel to MXF? really?

anyway

the QuickTime Default Template (uncompressed) should do it. or if you need 10-bit, download/install the Avid DNxHD codec or the Blackmagic codecs, either of which are available free for Mac/PC.

note; file size will get real big real quick: trim each shot before transferring from Mac to PC or things might get tricky.

Better look carefully at the output w/alpha. I and many others have found that no matter what procedure we follow, we introduce a black halo around the images when we put the rendered file w/alpha back on the timeline. You can't see the black halo if you allow the default Sony black to show through the alpha, so put a generated media file on the track below and give it a light-blue color so that the dark halo, if present, will be visible.

I second that. I never could get rid of the black halo no matter which codec I tried. It seems to be a problem unique to Vegas. I've seen solutions posted and tried them, but none of them ever actually worked for me. I gave up on doing alpha layer clips in Vegas because of that. Chroma keyed stuff with a background looks fine.

Not a technician, and have never claimed to be.
So the knowledge shared so unselfishly here is of immense value.

Several months ago I did a similar project.

Recall adding an alpha channel, either premultiplied or unmatted.
Rendered out to mp4.
The green became black, like all good alpha channels, right?
This time that's not happening.
Greenscreen still there after rendering.

Dan

Key out green then render to .Mov in Vegas .done…send …….don’t click or look for anything ,it's done …send

Elegant and simple solution.
Thanks so much Rory.
Tried rendering to .MOV, and it stops at 10%.
Doesn't crash, just stops rendering.
Am rendering out to mp4 now.
Rory Cooper wrote on 4/20/2010, 8:53 AM
Dan I have had that as well try moving the event a frame forward or back

If you still battle take the long schlep space invader route. Render to png sequence then load the seq Select straight alpha and render that to mov .

If you still don’t come right post

unlikely but... check share permissions on the drive you're rendering the QT to.

i can't render QT to drives with shares (the hand under the drive icon) turned on.
getting rid of that hand allowed me to render... dunno why.

i noticed this with v9c, don't know if this was unique to my system or common to all.

That on the toolbar Rob?
Dan Sherman wrote on 4/20/2010, 12:17 PM
Will try that too Rory.
What a forum!
Dan Sherman wrote on 4/22/2010, 2:03 PM
Still no luck.
Rendered to PNG Sequence and ended up with 15 thousand stills!
Dan Sherman wrote on 4/22/2010, 2:31 PM
Reset settings with the control/shift move and .MOV is finally rendering.
Also downloaded latest version of QT.
But think it was the former that did the trick.
Hope that helps someone else.
