Adding a new event

mekelly wrote on 3/21/2008, 9:58 AM
I have put together a 5 minute video/still/audio file of an event. I have locked several of the video and audio events to prevent them from getting out of sync. Now I'd like to add a four second clip at the front of everything and want to know the easiest way to do that. I know I can turn on ripple editing but because of the locked events things get out of sync when I just try to slide events to the right.

Am I correct in thinking I have to unlock everything that's been locked in order for ripple editing to work? What's the easiest way to add this four second clip to the front of the project while ensuring everything else stays perfectly aligned?

Thanks in advance!

The completed video should be grouped, and then may be moved as a unit without disturbing the sync of events within the group. Whether you place the new event in the existing track or in a new track is a personal preference and also depends on your particular workflow and how you want to handle transitions among the different events.

Yup.

Unlock the locked events, add your four second clip, and go to Edit -> Post-Edit Ripple -> All Tracks, Markers, and Regions. This will move everything over to accommodate the event you just added. And doesn't require that you turn on Auto-Ripple.

Ctrl+A to select everything.
Place cursor at beginning.
Insert - Time.
Set to 4 seconds.
Drop new clip into this space.
Save.
Done.

Or you could select all events (ctrl+a) and simply drag them together, regardless of whether they are locked, grouped or just good friends.

Selecting all events (Ctrl-A) doesn't let me move locked events. How'd you get Vegas to do that, Kenny?

Thanks for the quick responses but it appears that you MUST unlock all events before they will move. Selecting everything (either by CTRL+A or using the mouse) will not move them, causing sync problems.

I tried it on my larger project and then created a simple project with two video clips and an audio clip. As long as you have a locked event, moving appears to be problematic (at least for me).

The locked event isn't selected, that's why it doesn't move. It looks like locked, really means LOCKED!

If your main reason for locking the events is to keep things in sync, you may be better off grouping those events (that you want to sync). In the long run, it's less hassle.

Just select the events that are "related" (by clicking the first one and then Ctrl-clicking any others) and hit "G" for group.

The locked event isn't selected, that's why it doesn't move.

Oh, but it is selected. Want proof? Put two events on a new timeline. Lock one, but don't lock the other. Select the locked event and try to move it: doesn't move. Select the non-locked event and try to move it: moves. Now select both events (either Ctrl-click each one or do Ctrl-A to select all events) and try moving them.

Neither one will move because the non-locked event is constrained by the locked event. Therefore, both must have been selected.

yea - my bad about locked - not quite thinking straight on that one..

The 'group' alternative does seem to make more sense, I think I'll do that. With 140 files in this project is there any way to quickly see which ones are locked? I remember most of them but if I miss one and move everything it will create a huge mess.

View -> Edit Details

This adds a window to the docking area (where the Explorer, Video FX, etc windows are) that shows details about your project. From the Show dropdown, choose Events. There is a column labeled Lock that will show which events are locked and which are not. In fact, you can lock / unlock them right there.

I haven't tried this, but it seems to me the quick and dirty solution is to use the locked timeline as a nested veg in a new project, then you can move it around however you want.

Rob,

What a great feature, thanks for highlighting it! I'll go that route and thanks again.

That's why I suggested the "Insert - Time" option.
It will do what you want whether events are locked or not.

Mike,

It doesn't move events that are locked.

mekelly , that's very strange.
I tried it before I suggested it and it worked for me.

Doesn't work for me, either. I got two events, one locked and one not locked. When I select all events and do Insert > Time, only the non-locked one moves. The locked one stays put.
