Adding a rain effect

I’m working with VEGAS Pro 15 on a laptop running Windows 10.

I downloaded a rain effect (w 1,920 h 1,080) and placed it on top of a video shot with a mobile phone (w 540 h 960). So, of course, I have black panels either side of my video. I adjusted the rain effect to match output aspect and set the compositing mode to screen.

My problem is that it "rains" not only in the video but also on the black panels on either side. I tried to punch in the same width and height as the video clip in the event pan/crop panel, but it still "rains".

Grateful for some pointers as to how to fix this. /Ginna

Use masking either at the event or track level to keep the rain out of the bars. Google "vegas pro mask tutorial" if you're new to masking
