Adding a Slate (graphic) to an Existing DVD

Here is my workflow:

1. Use the Vegas 'Import From DVD' tool to bring all the VTS files onto a new timeline. It was originally an auto-play DVD with one 1 hour movie.
2. Use Vegas to generate the Title Card.
3. Use Vegas to export the Title Card and VTS clips all butted together.
4. Use DVD Architect to create a new DVD.

Seems like a lot of re-encoding but is there a better way?

Use a program to rip the DVD to an MPEG file. No loss

Create your gaphic as a separate video.

Re-author DVD with first play as your new title, the end action to play the MPEG from the original DVD. Might be a slight pause between title and video, but if you fade to black, it will be almost unnoticed and you have not lost any to re-encoding.

To expand a bit on Dave's workflow:

Rip the clips to one mpeg file in VideoRedo in Quickstream Fix mode (just in case).
Render the slate at 8Mbs CBR in Vegas.
Stitch it back with the mpeg in VideoRedo.
Save as .vob and open in DVDA.

+1

Womble gets my vote. It has saved me from re-encoding several times when time is tight and an entire render is out of the question.

I have full versions of Womble (MPEG Video Wizard) and VideoRedo Plus.
It's solely a personal preference, but my vote goes with VRD, because it is so slick with broadcast programs.
I can go from a 2 hr. broadcast recorded on DVD-RAM to commercial-free .mpg in under an hour.
I should have mentioned, no recode either, and fixes GOP indexing on-the-fly.
