Adding LOGO to project

I have a .jpg/.gif LOGO I want to add to a project. Something along the lines of TV station ID's one sees in the corner of transmissions.

The logo is irregular shaped on a white background.

How do I add just the logo without the white surround? With my limited knowledge, I need something like the opposite to chroma keying.

Make a chroma key with white as a key color.

Hmm... yes 2 ways here, maybe more. . .

1 - CK could work, it depends if that which you are CKing OUT, here white, is not present elsewhere. Could work.

2 - Creating transparent background. Firstly you'll need some type of graphics package. Import your JPG or whatever into it. I've had success in MS Photodraw, where I've removed and made "transparent" that which I don't want. Here, again, it would be the white. I save as a PNG format and in the preferences on "Save" making sure it keeps the tranparency option. Once you've done this, V4 quite happily "imports" this piece of media into the Media Pool. You should then see the logo sitting on a "chequered" background - the indication that in fact the backgorund is transparent. Oh one word of warning! I remember when I first did this in PD, and I tried to "grab" hold of the image - after making it transparent - and couldn't move it! Yer know what? Well, you've guessed correctly. I was attempting to grab hold of a transparent part of the image. That which is transparent you can't grab hold of - it aint there!

Hope this helps,

Grazie
