Adding subjects to shot one by one.

I am doing a piece which I want to add 4 subjects to a couch one by one. I would like them to fade/appear onto the couch while the subject who is on the couch is still talking. There will be no dialog between subjects they will only be talking to the camera.

I will use a tripod for my camera..

I have messed with opacity but cannot figure the best way to do this. Using Vegas 5

Make sure the camera does not move and roll with each person in the proper place. In editing use one of the various split screen methods to get them into the video. The standard fade tool can fade them in and out.
