Adding Text

Forgive this query if the answer is blatantly obvious - I'm still new to Vegas.
I wish to overlay text on segments of moving video footage. I want the text to appear without any background color which will affect the appearance of the moving images. I did not find any adjustment or setting to permit a transparent text background. I thus far have only been able to create text overlays that have colored backgrounds adjustable from 0000 black to 255 255 255 255 white. There has to be a simple way to create static text overlays with transparent backgrounds. Anyone?

Right in Vegas, Text/Backgrounds. Pick any one with a checkerboard background and place on a higher track than the video. Read up on Alpha Channels for more info.
