adding text problem

Hi All,
I have been trying to add text to my video without success, All I want to do is simply superimpose some basic text on my video, I go into media generators select a text with a clear background and drag it into a track above my video, when I play the video back the text appears with a solid black bacground, I want it superimposed ontop of my video without any black background.. I have gone into text properties and made sure that the backgroung colour is translucent but that does not help.
any advice is greatly appreciated

By "clear" do you mean the checkerboard background? That's the transparent option. The preset with solid black is solid black, not transparent.

Place the text on a track above the video. This way they get mixed together. If you drop the text onto the same track as the video then it replaces the video.
