Most likely you converted it to AVI using a codec that Vegas doesn't natively support. Guessing Divx, Xvid, or maybe MP4. These are what's called DirectX codecs, which are optimized for playback. Vegas prefers VfW (Video for Windows) codecs, which are better suited for editing.

Solution #1: Convert your video to AVI using a VfW codec like DV, Lagarith, or Huffyuv.

Solution #2: Install a VfW codec capable of decoding the codec you used already. My favorite Swiss Army knife for this is ffdshow. You may or may not need to run its VfW Configuration tool and fiddle with the Decoder tab for it to kick in for the codec you used.
