Adjusting volume in one clip

Hi:

I learned so many practical tips from my last question that I'm going to ask another.

To adjust the volume in one clip: put it on its' own track. But you could end up with a multitude of tracks. I suppose I could also create a subclip, render and exchange the original with the the rendered clip, but that seems like an awful lot of steps.

So, again the question: Is there an easier way?

Thank you!

Jon

the answer will be found in an envelope

Put your cursor near the top of the timeline on the audio event.you want to adjust the level. It will change to a HAND. LEftclick and drag that line down, that will adjust the volume for that event only.

Note: You can only LOWER the volume this way, but it is a quick way.

Other option, add a volume envelope to the track.
There's a subtle but useful difference between using the event envelope and the track envelope.
The event envelope also changes the waveform, the track envelope doesn't. The former can be very handy at times, lik when you're trying to match waveforms.

Note: You can only LOWER the volume this way, but it is a quick way.

Right click the clips sound, >Switches, >Normalize will maximize the clips volume.
After this you can lower as desired pulling down the upper edge of the audio
(see page 186 in the V9 manual)

Plus note that they are also at different places in the audio chain.

When you adjust the gain on the clip, that is the "event volume envelope" as someone called it, that control is the very first control that you can affect the audio with. Any track effects that you apply, such as compression, EQ, etc., come AFTER it.

While the track volume envelope comes AFTER the track effects.

Personally, I find it VERY useful to be able to visually match my audio waveform levels by adjusting them with the gain. I honestly use that control a lot more than the track volume envelopes in my editing.

there's a nice easy way to raise a single clip's levels as well

I created a shortcut for the normalize event option.

So if I need to add gain, I will normalize it, then I will bring the gain back down to the desired position.
