Adobe DV RAck HD2 or DV rack wHDV pack

I noticed that on the Serious Magic site that the only thing offered is the New DV Rack HD2 version at 499.00
But B&H shows DV Rack with the HDV plug in for 329.00 still in stock.
I am looking for a direct to disc fro HDV only so is there any reason why I would need the newest version? I wont be needing the other HD formats it supports. Is there any performance difference W? HDV that anyone knows of?

Not sure about the latest DV Rack availability, but I just last weekend downloaded HDVSplit. It now has a "preview/monitor"-type mode. Not as fancy as DV Rack with the scopes/graphs. I've wanted DV Rack/HD for a long time, just never sprung for it.

HDVSplit real-time response on my test PC with my FX1 was lagging/delayed, but it is supposed to be GPU-enhanced, so a better video card should help.

Even with the lagging, slowed preview, it captured real time HDV with no dropped frames, direct to PC hard drive (firewire if I remember correctly).

Not bad for free.

HDVsplit looks interesting for previewing, although it has none of the tools that DVRack offers. My laptop isn't nearly up to the job of preview during capture, but would still be a good aid for checking focus during setup. Of course the laptop won't run DVRack without lag, either, although it seemed to do a bit better (test licence now expired so can't compare). Nothing that money won't fix!

Whoops accidentally erased my previous post ,
I guess HDV split really does the same as the HDV capture util in Vegas as far as live capture goes. Its more the features of DV Rack that make it worth spending the additional $$.

Eric,
The two are currently exactly the same. Adobe will be honoring upgrades when available, for all current Serious Magic DV Rack +HD PowerPack owners.
Adobe still hasn't fully integrated Serious Magic into their system, but once they do, I imagine all existing older product will be recalled from vendors, so if you can get the better deal...you can't go wrong.

Thanx Spot ,
Gonna place my order now @ B&H. Quite a savings IMO

DV Rack is FANTASTIC! I have the HD2 upgrade from my previous version of HDV Powerpak, and it does offer a few enhancements that are very handy, such as onion skinning and time lapse recording.
The biggest advantage is using the laptop as a reasonably accurate field monitor and the direct to HDD capture is worth its price alone. I haven't used a tape in nearly 2 years! I simply buy an external HDD (the client pays for) and the entire project is captured and stored on the same drive. No down time for tape capture and i don't end up having to archive projects. I give the HDD to my client and they are responsible for it.

That 's kinda the plan I have. Am planning on doing a fair amount of chromakey / studio work here in the upcoming months. The fact that it has a good monitor capability and I'll be using a 17" widescreen laptop and external FW drives am looking forward to the time savings in capture and I can then go straight into Ultra or convert to CFDI's much faster than if i had to capture from the tapes. Plus I think with the calibration aspects it will help me keep my shots more consistant from day to day . (the split screen function etc.)Least thats the plan...
