Advance composition question

Hi all,

first take a look at this picture :

http://fapomatic.com/58/dj_1.jpg

Now the DJ was bezier out from the rest of the picture and I applied two generated media , one black , one white. I adjusted the media as you can see.

Now what I'd like to do is that the two media only affect the bezier part of the picture ie : the DJ.

All my efforts ended up in the two media affecting the whole thing.

Anyway to accomplish what I'm looking for

Thanks

Phil

Phil, What you need to do is make a luminance mask from the Bezier mask and apply it to the generated media. There are a few ways you can do this. One is to:

1. Copy the DJ image to a track directly above the generated media.
2. Create a Solid White Generated Media and delete it from the track you created it on (we just wanted it in the media pool)
3. Right-click and Drag the Solid White Generated Media from the media pool and drop it as a new take on the copy of the DJ. (you should now see a white mask of the DJ)
4. Change the composite mode on this track to Multiply (Mask)
5. Make the generated media tracks a child of this mask track and they will only display where there is white.

You should now see the generated media only in the area that is masked by the copy of the DJ Bezier.

You could have also saved the Bezier of the DJ as a preset and applied that preset to the Solid White Generated Media, but that will only save a single keyframe and I assume you may have created multiple keyframes of the mask. So duplicating the event and adding the white media as a take was simpler to do and preserves the keyframes.

Hi Johnny ,

Well this is all good stuff . Everything worked like a charm . I wasn't aware of the "new take" fonction. I will look more into it , I assume this is powerful stuff and I could need it in the future.

Your 2 methods would've been ok by me since I didn't use more than one keyframe for this particular effect that I want to try.

Thank you very much for your time , greatly appreciated.

Phil

ps: I am sure I will edit this thread , a question is bound to surface :)

Here comes the edit, now if I wanted to do the opposite , to have the surrounding of the DJ affected.

2nd edit :

Let's say I would want to produce an effect much like a laser scanner that will go over the DJ , only I want the scanner to go within the boundaries set by the bezier.

Now if I add a red color generated media and pan/crop it so it becomes a thin red line it will still be visible outside the boundaries of the bezier mask. But if I apply the bezier preset to it it will now only be visible on the DJ.

Now here comes the tricky part , if i move that media up and down it will not be even since it has the form of the DJ.

Hopefully this is kinda clear , in other words , the red line when moved up and down will only appear within the DJ.

Thanks again

Could we see an image a little larger than a one-inch thumbnail?

hi ,

I am not sure what you are talking about , if it is about the jpeg I posted in my first post it is not small I just checked it

Thanks for your time

When we look at it we see a 125x92 pixel image. Perhaps since it's not our fapomatic.com account we only get to see a tiny thumbnail.

Try this instead: Use a Gradient as the generated media. Add a third point to the gradient and make its color transparent. Modify the other points so that point 1 is transparent, point 2 is red, and point 3 is transparent. By moving points 1 & 3 closer to 2, you will get a thin red line. The plus sign in the center can be moved to move the line and keyframes can be added to record the movement. Within this one generated media, you can create a thin red line that moves across the screen and you haven’t even touched Pan/Crop yet so it is still available to add your Bezier mask and limit where the line is seen. (If I understand correctly what you are trying to achieve. If I don’t just ask again)

Hi Johnny ,

Well again that worked perfectly . When I apply the bezier mask to the gradient it only shows within the DJ.

One thing though , I leave point 1 and 3 as they are. That's way I think I ought to leave them if I want them to be invisible. But by doing so it kinda softened the edge of the color , I was looking for the hard red , one that i could lower the opacity if needed to.

If I lower the opacity of the gradient it lowers it for the whole gradient and not just the thin red line like it did when I used the media generator.

I'll keep trying things though.

Thanks

Phil

************* Edit ********************

Well if I add a fourth and fifth point I can then reduce the softness (created by point 1 and 3 ) of the edges completely YEE-HAAA :)

I was just going to suggest that. (but doesn’t it feel so much better that you figure it out by yourself!) Glad it worked for you.

Actually, at that point, all you need is 4 points. 1 transparent, 2 & 3 red, and 4 transparent. Move 1 on top of 2 and 4 on top of 3.

Never underestimate the power of Generated Media! ;-)

Indeed it does :)

Thank you very much for the time you gave , I greatly appreciate it

Best to you , see you soon

Phil

ps: When I first started to use Vegas I thought that those generated media were a waste of programmer's time , I don't have that opinion anymore HAHAHA :)
