Advanced Vegas features? Gurus...

omar wrote on 3/23/2005, 9:52 PM
I was wondering does Vegas have the capability to do some of the more advanced things such as:

making someone or something fade out of a frame alone without the rest of the frame,
or like simulating something magical in someone's hands such as fire or energy bursting out of a pot or having a background go in fast motion while something in the foreground goes regular or slow motion.

Are these kinds of things available in Vegas? If so where should I be looking in Vegas to play with them...

Thanks in advance

What your'e looking for can't be done in any application just by simply "clicking a button" or applying an FX. Usually there is some effort involved.

All you asked for CAN be done in vegas by using the right approaches. Use of Bezeir masking, chroma key, multiple tracks, velocity envelopes, and more and more.

Yeah, I'm with Liam on this one.

PLUS, your, "making someone or something fade out of a frame alone without the rest of the frame," this isn't a Vegas or another NLE trick. It is you thinking ahead for the shot and post prod. Basically with a locked down tripod and camera you shoot the person with plenty of the "non-person" shot and then dissolve this in front and on the person leaving the shot. DON'T move the camera! You then bring this to your NLE and then dissolve the "empty" shot into the person shot and even dissolve back out through the person "leaving the shot. Simple eh?

Bottom line here is that there is "masses" you can achieve with camera PRIOR to getting to the NLE. Think ols style camrea work and you wont go far wrong. Old was nornally "simple". I've learnt "stacks" from watching old movies - and yes at times I've had my head "truned" by the Bells 'n Whistles of this new digital craft. However, sometimes - OFTEN! - the solution remians in the - OUR - real analogue World . . . ooohhh I can here the keyboards clacking away already!

... and you think you've got it tough -

In the good old days, we had to set light to actors and use timelapse.

Then the Unions stepped in.

Yep - as you suggested Grazie, the Placement Tab makes a better Credit Roll than the Credit Roll.

This is one of the great things that Text Editor suppies - the PLUS and MINUS use on the Text Editor Timeline to get controllable Credit Rolls! . . . Hope this "feature" is extended and built upon in V6?

Grazie, I read in another thread where you suggested the text media generator instead of the credit roll (due to the limitations of the credit roll). At the time I just thought you were talking about simply dissolving or fading one credit into the next. I just realized you were talking about using the placement tab to make it scroll (duhhhh). I just tried it, it looks great (with no limitations on font size etc) and I'm anxious to use it on my next project that requires credits but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything else I may be in the dark on...
What is the PLUS and MINUS use on the Text Editor Timeline you speak of my friend?
TIA,
Randy

You got X and Y coords - yeah? Now if you want text to move right or left them then pop a "minus" sign " - " infront of the X value . . and if you want the text to go up or down do the same! - Experiment with it and you'll quickly get the gist of it.

Thanks guys, I know it's not drag-n-drop stuff...I'm just looking for direction.

> omar: check out these videos, all made with Vegas or Movie Studio (Vegas' little brother):

nice. do you have any tutorials btw?

Are you taking a shot of the person and area separately and layering them
Chienworks wrote on 3/24/2005, 12:21 PM
Omar: the technique is basically that you shoot the scene with the person in the picture, then shoot it again without them, then crossfade between the takes with whatever sort of transition you want to use.
