ADVC-100 vs ADVC-1394

I'm looking for a good analog to digital convertor and I know from this group the Canopus ADVC-100 is highly recommended. They now also have an ADVC-1394 which is a PCI card with analog-digital capture plus firewire.

My question: Should I stick with the ADVC-100?? Has anyone used the ADVC-1394 and can give us some feedback?? Getting ready to buy.

Only advise I can give is to check out the Canopus forums -> they were having a big problem with the 100 in winXP after SP1 was applied.

Yes indeed.

The main thing about the ADVC100 is that it's bi-directional. Converts incoming and outgoing.

Add to that that it's portable, will work with a laptop when traveling (Allows you to view output on a hotel room TV if you have to.)

The bad part is that the shielding isn't great so you need to keep it away from RF. It can also produce some noise on the line if you have it in a chain with a field monitor. That gets it unplugged right away. Still, these are minor flaws.

I have the ADVC-1394.

I am very satisfied with it ... I haven't used other capture products ... but I feel that the quality of the capture is excellent. I have not had any capture problems with the ADVC-1394. I have it installed in a PIII 950 machine running WinXPsp1.

I have an ADVC1394 and am very happy with it. Worked right out of the box. No problem. Prior to my purchase, I had no experience with capture devices or NLE software. I considered the ADVC100. Since I had no NLE software and it came with WinDVD and Vegas, I purchased the 1394. Sure, the analog out would be nice, but I figured that I was going to make a VCD anyway, so it is quite easy to dub from the VCD/DVD player to the VHS recorder.

Since I run the 1394 on a Windows ME machine, I have not experienced the problems that users have had running XP and SP1. Go to www.canopus.com forum to get the scoop. They admit there is a problem, however some people with XP and SP1 seem to be able to use the 1394.

This is the only problem I am aware of with the 1394. There seems to be alot of traffic about the 100, but since I don't have it, I have not read the posts. Just go over there and do your homework. Lots of luck!!!!!!!

I had an ADVC1394 and had real problems with it. I saw in their forums that a lot of other people also had problems and no final resolution was offered by Canopus. Essentially, you had to frequently reboot to get the 1394 device to be recognized. Their (Canopus) answer was to e-mail them (Canopus) and, based on your system, they would give you some driver to *try*.

I took it back to the store.

I have had absolutely no trouble at all with the ADVC-100. The output-ability is also very nice.

It is a first class piece of equipment.
