Advice for firewire converter

Hi gents/ and ladies too

I really hope that this wasn't covered before but I have searched and didn't really find what I was looking for (unless my thought pattern on the search engine was screwy).

I shoot HDV (z1) and for the most deliver to SD at the moment. I want to get a reasonably priced converter to output to a SD broadcast monitor for color correction and exposure.

I'm not so much worried about viewing full 1080 image res so to go component out is not critical - or is it? I have an option on a VERY fair priced JVC monitor I would like to excersize.

The monitors capable of handling 1080 are still so darned pricey and I would rather wait for these prices to drop and attend to my immediate needs.

Would the Canopus ADVC 110 or 300 be suitable for this kind of application? The 110 hasn't got component out, but then the monitor doesn't have a component in either! Or is there something else out there similarly priced which would be a better option?

Advice from the all stars would be appreciated

Thanks

DVBoy,
The 300 works great for me. There are several other ways to get to an external monitor that are cheaper than buying a 300 ( the ADVC 100 or through a camera for instance) but you get the added bonus of an excellent media converter with the 300, which actually enhances captured footage while converting to a digital format. If you just want to get to an external monitor, the 300 is overkill. Hope that helps.

All that's missing is a *monitor* with firewire input.

Awh...let's dream...

Sony do make a firewire card for some of their broadcast monitors, from memory it's not much cheaper than the SDI option card, does that give you a hint as to why no one uses them?

Thanks guys

It puts me in the right direction.

For the color correction fundi's, would working with a HDV intermediate on the timeline and outputting to SD over firewire have any effect or impact on the output with respect to color correction?

I know it won't be at the same resolution - but as I have said before, all I want is to correct color and exposure correctly. Are there any specifics I would need to watch out for?

Thanks again to all who have helped.

FuTz, FWIW, Markertek sells an IEEE 1394 monitor-receiver. Don't know a thing about it.

Its at markertek.com and search "DVTV."

Overall, not really. HD is one colorspace, SD is another, but if you're outputting SD, you can see it on an external monitor at all times, and will want to correct based on that. Just be sure your monitor is calibrated properly.
Glenn Chan's excellent tutorial on Levels will help you understand exposure correction.
