Advice setting up DAW using Vegas Audio please.

I want to do multitrack recording using Vegas Audio. I've extensively used ADATS/Mackie's in the past and want to make the move to hard disk PC based recording. I've been using SoundForge for a few years and like it, that's why I thinking I'm going with Vegas Audio 2.0. I have a few questions I'm hoping the people on this forum can help me with.

I'm considering the MOTU 828 or Echo Layla 24 AD/DA boxes. I like the MOTU 828 for the firewire interface. Any comments on these boxes? I need to be able to record 8 channels at at time. How do these boxes compare with the sound of the original ADAT. I'm familiar with their sound. Hopefully the new ones are significantly better.

How does the eq in VA sound? Does it have three quality settings like in SoundForge?

Will I be able to mix 24-30 tracks on my computer with eq and compression on many of the channels and some other bussed effects? I have a PIII 850 with 512MB. I do video editing so I have fast secondary drives.

Should I wait until VA 3.0 comes out?

What do you guys do for monitoring? I would like to keep my set up as simple as possible. What I'm going to suggest seems kind of tricky, would it be possible. Record 8 tracks using one of the boxes above while recording a scratch vocal using the sound card in the computer? Now, could all nine of these inputs be mixed in VA and output to a head phone amp? Basically, I'd like to use all eight of the "good" inputs for the basic tracking. Overdubs can be done later.

Thanks for any help/suggestions. Looking forward to joining the VA community!
