After all the tantrums and tears ...

Like many a lost child I travelled around looking for NLE software that suited my braininess and technological knowledge and knocked on VEGAS door and it welcomed me. Now it seems that my old friend is moving out and a bigger and better friend is going to take the room. Will this new roomie be too expensive or will the upgrade from 5 to 6 be under a AU$100 do you think ?
I mean it's only vegas 5 plus some new bits and pieces not a completely new programme at best it's 100mb of software surely ?

Vegas 5 isn't going away. It won't stop working after Vegas 6 is released.

Never make the mistake of judging the worth of any software by how much room it takes up on your PC. Take Windows (please) as an example of bloatware. There used to be a time when programmers actually tried to make applications as small as possible. Then, back in those days people writing computer applications were called programmers. Today's crop prefer the term software engineer. Maybe some get paid by the byte. <wink>

Funny! Yea, the boys in Redmond.

If Microsoft would spend more time fixing bugs than planting easter eggs into Windows that would be nice too.

- $17000 for 2 floppy discs ( 2 meg )
must be a doozy of a programme

I should point out that the exchange rate between US$ and AUS$ is about 1 to 0.65
so thats about $10,000 per disc here yowza !

Me thinks our exchange rate tis a bit better than that. You've obviously never bought software for a mainframe, AUD 70,000 for a Fortran 77 compiler, I think it was only a few 8" floppy disks but we did write code worth many millions with it, it's all relative.

It's raining, it's pouring
My lovelife is boring me to tears, after all these years

Enough is enough is enough
I can't go on, I can't go on no more no

Your own work ? I don't recognise it

" I've been contemplating suicide
but it really doesn'tsuit my style
So I think I'll just act bored instead
- to contain the word I would have said

She makes me feel so weary
my heart is really on its knees
Well ! I keep a poker face so well
- that even Mum and Dad can't tell

My baby's so vain she's almost a mirror
and the sound of her name sends a permanent shiver down my spine "

Sonic Scenarist is only like 10MB with a $25K pricetag.

Sometimes the complaints about the cost of Vegas seem like whining. For perspective, I usually compare video production to construction. The projects are often on the same scales, the level of organization is similar, and the cost of tools is comparable.

Given that, I see that sliding compound miter saws run around $500.00 US at the Home Depot. This is only one tool but a nearly essential one.

Get a little perspective.

I think that's totally a ridiculous example. There are no materials needed to create software, expect a dollar or so per unit to put it on a CD, maybe some cardboard box, then even after factoring in shipping/handing, overhead, even with that, not talking a huge investment.

Software companies of course can invest hundreds, thousands, maybe even a million man hours or more "developing" the software, so labor costs are high. The plus side, (ask Billy G.of Microsoft) is if you have even a modestly successful hit, then the money comes in by the truck load and its almost pure profit.

Build a house or commerical building roughly 40% of the cost IS materials. As far as scale, no not even close. To build a typical house, you need a wide range of skilled craftsmen from many fields to bring it all together. Give me a camera or two some other props, Vegas plus a little time and I can pretty much ALONE do some very nifty things. That's a more realistic perspective.

Not knocking what anyone does, but I still remember the work my grandpa did, him working on many of the major building of his time in downtown Chicago. He was a highly skilled craftsman that could make ordinary plaster take on a finsh that looked liked polished marble. He took his "secret" to the grave. He was an ARTIST and highly sought after.

No, not my work, it's from a duet by Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer which was one of the odder relics of the disco era. Half of the song is a Broadway show tune with sappy strings and then halfway through it changes to a disco beat. It sounds like you nested the wrong ACID projects together.

If you go on BarnesandNoble.com, they have a sample of the song. On the Barbra Striesand Best Of, they have the show tune part, for the Donna Summer Best Of the have the disco part.

I'm going to guess the upgrade from v4.5 to v5 of Discreet Edit..? I approved that purchase years ago. :)

Jeez - you're bringing back my old DJ years. I used to play that on the radio.

Thanks for the memories! I'd just about fergotten about that little gem. I'll probably find it on one of my old reel to reel (remember those) aircheck tapes in the closet.

Any other ex-DJs on these forums?

I had to play that song on bass in a high school choir concert. It was in Eb if I recall, and i had been playing bass for about 5 days. <shudder> I was almost sight reading, and it was pretty bad. The Streisand section was the hard part, not the disco section!
