After Effects 5.5 in Vegas Video

I am currently working on a project where I am trying to bring a JPEG file, image of a map, and overlay it as an additional track in V.V. 3.0c. Due to the layout of the JPEG file, I can not move around / manipulate the image in Pan Crop as I would like to. The image is centered and I need to crop it to the right edge of the screen.

I am able to do it with no problem in After Effects 5.5, quite simple actually!!, BUT when I render the file as an AVI. COMPOSITION SETTINGS:
- NTSC DV 720X480
- PIXEL ASPECT RATIO DV NTSC ( 0.9)
- FRAME RATE 29.97
- RESOLUTION FULL
- NESTING OPTIONS PRESERVE FRAME RATE / RESOLUTION

and export the file as:

- DV-NTSC
- QUALITY BEST
- FRAME 29.97

I get an AVI. file that is slighty blurry / almost out of focus, not as crispt as if I render the file ( with the map in the wrong location) directly in V.V.

QUESTION:

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MOVE JPEG IMAGES FREELY AS A LAYER IN V.V. 3.0 OR 4.0??

ANY SUGGESTION TO IMPROVE RESULTS IN AFTER EFFECTS 5.5???

Thanks

You can move images freely with Vegas (either 3 or 4). Use Pan/Crop when you want to pan or crop an image. To MOVE and image, take a look at Track Motion. It will let you move or resize an image. Another option is the plugin-pac 3d-LE tool from www.debugmode.com which will also let you size and position but adds the ability to rotate on any axis.

Thanks JetDV,

Pan/Crop will only allow me to resize the image (map). When I try to move it around, like moving it to the right edge of the screen, the image begins to disappear, as if moving passed a window and the whole screen becomes black. It won't allow me to move it freely like in After Effects. Will Track Motion allow me to move it as a separate layer?

Any explanation why the rendered file in After Effects would not be as "crisp" as in Vegas Video??

Yes, use TRACK MOTION to modify the placement. It will let you move the image independently to anywhere. Of course, it will need to be on its own separate track.

MoBetta,

I think I've seen the problem you are talking about. In the track motion window, there is a pull down related to aspect ratio. If I select a normal aspect ratio, then the jpeg (portrait shaped) stretches inappropriatly. If I select the source default aspect ratio, then I am unable to move any part of the picture outside of it's original centered position.

In other words, if I use track motion to zoom in to a small part of the jpeg, it still doesn't fill the screen, it only fills the area that the normally sized jpeg filled.

I too would appreciate any guidance in getting past these "hard margins".

Thanks,

John.

That’s because in Pan/Crop you probably have Stretch to fill frame checked. If you uncheck this it will crop the view window and not resize the image. Sometimes you have to resize the dialog box to be longer just to see these options. Then if you hold the Atl and Ctrl key down, you will temporarily disable Size About Center and Lock Aspect Ratio respectively which will allow you to crop to just see the right side of the image. You can then use Track Motion to position that cropped image anywhere on the screen including resizing it.
