You might want to try VASST's "Edge Detective" plug in. they have a demo version to see if it will get you close to the sketch'd images your looking for.

I agree - that plugin will do exactly what you're looking for.

thanks...i'll give it a shot

Hi Maynard,

Using the Edge Detective plug-in, the default mode ("Sketch") should give you what you're looking for. Play around with the "Edge Threshold" value to tweak the amount of edges that are drawn.

Good luck!

Here is a link to a site that has the video:

and here is a thread that discussed ways to create line drawings or cartoons from live video (although the edge detect function is also a way to go):

Also, experiment with the bump map.

Ahh, those were the days...when music videos actually took talent to make.

If you have accesses to After Effects with the Tinder Box plug-in “Etch” – it will do a great job – takes you right back to the 80s.

If you have a short clip(less than 300mb) I could add the effect to it for you.
Send me an email and I’ll send you to my FTP site info.

This made me laugh. You are referring to 80's videos!!!

Yeah, I remember when MTV debuted, and I went around telling everyone we were witnessing the birth of a new art form. I collect early '80s music videos, and some of them definitely were WAY beyond the junk produced today, and I still think some of them were "art" e.g., Herbie Hancock's "Rockit"

Herbie Hancock's "Roclkit" - The robot manikin legs really disturbed me!
The the kicking and walking of the robot legs!
Had nightmares about the robot legs kicking down my bed room door in the night!

I'm trying to spoof the "Take on Me" video by Ah-Ha for a family project. I'm using Vegas 6. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to accomplish this? I tried to find a link to the video for those not familiar with it but didn't have any luck.

I'd like to see how your video came out if you wouldn't mind posting it. You can always upload it to:

VegasUsers.com/vidshare

Maynard I posted a low res sample of the before and after of the effect @ vegasusers.com/vidshare (dibbkd has the link above)
If that’s the look you want – see my above post.

Thanks guys. It's just an idea I'm kicking around for a birthday present in a couple of months. I'll definitely post the final version once it's complete.

thanks for the replies...

Your test clip looked pretty good.

I collect 1980s music videos and last night was playing one DVD that I bought on eBay last year. There was the Ah-Ha video. Didn't even know I had it. My fourteen year old son even knew about it because it was recently spoofed. It is definitely iconic of that period.

Logan5, that looked very, very cool, very much like the Take on Me video look.

Can you say how you did that?
Logan5 wrote on 5/1/2006, 9:57 AM
Sure,
I used After Effects with the Tinder Box plug-in “Etch” default settings no tweaking.
The avi of the movie has a lot better detail then the posted file
