Hello everyone.
Just checking in to see if anyone has some solid feedback on Sony's AS30VR or AS100vr action-cam..
Just got a project that would warrant the purchase.
I already tried GoPro 3 Black and never quite liked the audio it produced no matter what I did in post.. Also the battery capacity left me hanging a few times and I had 3.
Just a brief on what I'm doing..
A friend is allowing me to mount said device on his leased Cessna 172 airplane and then I have to somehow mount it to a locomotive and also a moving barge on the river.. All of this is for a powerful intro for an indy that I have signed on to work with. Did I say "Low Budget"?
Thanks in advance.

Search on my user name in this forum. I have the AS100V and have posted some mixed reviews, most notably this one, two months ago:

My issues with Sony Action cam (HDR-AS100V)

For your application, the AS100V has these advantages over the GoPro Hero 3+ Black:

1. Better sound.
2. Better battery life.
3. Motion stabilization (this was the main reason I bought it, and it works well).
4. Easier to open/close the waterproof enclosure.

Downsides:

1. Very little 3rd party support. For instance, it is tough to find a 3D gimbal to mount the camera on a quadcopter.
2. Pretty bad fisheye when not using the stabilization (with stab turned off, the FOV gets larger)

Other downsides are covered in the link I provided above.

I have an AS15, AS30 and AS100 and am pretty satisfied with them. There are many ways of mounting them, and because they can also have a standard 1/4" thread mount, the possibilities are endless.

I find the fisheye effect is often ok to use, but if I don't want this I use ProDrenalin to "straighten out" the frame, which it does very well. I use the 120 degree setting most of the time, but 170 degrees is also available.

The picture quality is great, especially with well lit shots.

Thank you much for that very clear and direct "feedback"..
It almost seems like a "no-brainer" here...
BTW.. They are all water-proof with the proper housing if i"m not mistaken..
I actually don't even need the audio with this because............. You know..
Thanks again.. Time to beg for a "Bundle" deal so I can feel like I'm getting my money's worth.

I also have the AS100 and am pretty disappointed with it. The stabilisation works OK, but the picture quality is IMO inferior to my GoPro Hero 2. The fisheye distortion is too severe as well for my liking. So much so I have put mine up on eBay to get rid of it.

My application is also for use on railway vehicles, I have a specially designed magnetic limpet mount with resilient silicone mounts. But in putting the Sony and the GoPro together on the one mount then comparing the results, the older GoPro has the edge, certainly better in terms of picture quality.

GeeBax-
I do want a stable video and I haven't heard very many negatives about the stabilization feature on the Sony AS100 or the AS30.. Is it possible that maybe your unit was malfunctioning?
Or perhaps your expectations are higher than what Sony can deliver?

i believe geebax's expectations are those any professional would hold - and i certainly agree with his assessment of the fisheye distortion.

that said, we are discussing relatively cheap cameras after all.....

I was pointing out that I haven't read very many negatives on the camera as of yet.
I read and respect all responses.

"I was pointing out that I haven't read very many negatives on the camera as of yet."

Yet you have in this thread two people who actually have bought and tested the Sony AS100 and found it wanting. And in my case, able to compare the picture quality with a similar device from another maker.

John Meyer and I both bought the camera based on reviews published on the Internet and both of us were less than impressed with the device once we received it and tested it out. BTW, the stabilisation feature was working fine, but the lens distortion and picture quality were not up to the quality of my older camera.

I will be buying the new GoPro Hero 4 once my Sony As100 has sold. The audio quality is supposed to be improved over the previous models.

Just in case this hasn't been considered, most aero authorities are very restrictive when it comes to attaching things to aircraft. In this instance the aircraft is rented, so the owner must be consulted before even approaching the regulator. The friend doesn't have any relevant authority.

Yep. Here is some AS100 typical grandparent footage of grandson in the pool (underwater at the .

Also, regarding the fisheye - I've found the 170 degree to be too severe. The 120 degree can be okay depending on the shot but close-in straight lines will be distorted. I use the deform fx in Vegas to correct these. I also tried ProDad's defisher software and it works well.

Serena Stewart-
The owner of the aircraft is the father-in-law of my friend.. However I did consider the safety issues regarding the mount.
I can get by with mounting the device inside of aircraft because what I need is to capture a frontal shot of a landing with the runway coming into view and the final cut is at most 5 seconds.

TeeTime-
The blurry image underwater would not bother me as long as I'm not depending on clarity and detailed action.
In my application, I am more concerned with splash and such.
Overall, not a bad clip.
Thank you

A convenient arrangement. You shouldn't have any trouble mounting a camera inside the cabin. I did say "in case this hasn't been considered" and in this instance I wasn't being critical of your proposal, but it's surprising how many people assume they are free to attach a GoPro to anything that flies. Such as the bodies of friends taking a sky-dive and external to aircraft, where the risk to life is significant and the regulations are very strict.
Sometimes the pessimists are worth listening to; Michael Schumacher discovered to his cost that the common helmet mount is also dangerous.

Your response and it's sensible content suggests to me that I am in the right forum..
Safety should always prevail.
Good advice and observation.
