im trying to use an ati all in wonder in tandem with vegas
video but im having some issues.. when i capture with the
ati tv software it must use some strange codec that crashes
vegas upon import , so i figure i would use vegas video to
import..

the problem with that is i cant get the video capture
utility to recognize the card.. its there as a capture
device , but it wont let me select whether i want to
capture from the cable antenna , s-video , or composite
input.. im trying to capture from the composite input but
all i get is some wacky colors in the preview window...i
know for sure that the card is working correctly and that
the video i want to capture is playing at the same time...

any help?

Your card is more suited for capturing direct to MPEG
video, using a fast PC and some hardware acceleration on
the card fairly good results can be achieved.

However it's not really suitable for video editing, most
semi-pro capture cards capture footage in M-JPEG or
transfer DV directly from a Camcorder, and most, but not
all, editing software leans heavily towards these file
formats.

MPEG is highly compressed and isn't very suitable for
editing, but great for archiving.

You could try converting your captured mpeg files to AVI
files and then loading them into Vegas.
