All mosaic in the AVI file that captured by Vegas 5b.

Hi all,

I am a newbie of Vegas and yesterday tried to capture my Mini DV to my computer via 1394 card the first time. The whole tape was captured to a 16G AVI file then I tried to play it in windows mediaplyer, but it was all mosaic can't even see the image.

Then I tried UleadStudio 7 and the AVI file that it created was great, so I don't think it was a hardware(computer or 1384 card/cable) problem.

Any idea why was that? Thanks in advance for any help!

This is a bug that started with Vegas 4. Usually if you try again it will work fine. It can be a tremendous waste of time.

They can't seem to repro it consistently to get this one fixed.

Thanks Gary!

I've tried a few times...the result are all the same even 0 dropped frame.

I'm think that maybe I should use UleadStudio or Adobe?

I have had this happen repeatedly with both 4.0 and 5.0. It is a tremendous waste of time spent capturing 60 minutes of video to find out it is not usable. Somehow Vegas deterines mine should be formatted as some unknown version of PAL. As a result I now capture analog and do not waste time trying digital.

On my last capture I tested 5 minutes of the video before doing the entire tape (one of the fixes mentioned is to not start at the beginning of a mini DV tape but a few minutes into it). The first 5 minutes tested was correct. The remainder was garbage. I have always assumed it is a bug somewhere in my equipment set up (Sony Vaio computer with fireware built in, JVC Camera GR800U lots of memory and fast hard drives).

If it is a program bug this is really something that needs attention. I find it difficult to believe they are unable to consistently replicate the problem.

Kevin:

Maybe try http://www.scenalyzer.com/ there's a demo there and the full version is quite cheap and it is a good capture utililty.

I have found your point regarding not starting at the beginning of the DV tape to be true as well. I use VV4 and have no problems capturing DV footage. I recently used the "Capture Tape" command with no errors. I always start my capture at least 2-5 seconds into the tape.

I agree, if I let the tape play for a couple of secs before capture, no problem.

As long as you start capturing in stable video all should be good. If you start capturing in "hash" you can run into trouble, sometimes.
kakevin2000 wrote on 7/13/2004, 8:40 AM
Thanks for the response.

However, I didn't capture in "hash". As I said, the same tape is working fine in Ulead.

Now I turn the DV to play mode and play the video first, then click the "capture video", instead of using "Cature Tape" or "Start Capture" in the pop-up when the DV is connected.

I was able to capture the whole tape(well, not the first a couple of seconds) in good condition.

Thanks again!

I capture thousands of hours of video tape and the only time this problem happens is when you start the capture in the first 5 seconds of the tape. I have yet to lose a capture if you start recording after 5 seconds.

It is an annoying problem...

Does this mean it's a good idea to take five seconds of footage staring at a wall or something at the beginning of every tape?

no it doesn't have to be at the beginning of the tape. I got those mosaic AVI no matter where I started capturing.

it means when you hook up your DV and start VV capture program, In the "Verify Tape Name" pop up window, check that "Don't caputer any clips right now" checkbox, then click "OK" to close it.

Then click "Play" first, wait a few seconds, then click "Capture Video".

By doing so I was able to capture a good AVI...finally! =)

Hope this helps and THANKS again for all the helps from everyone!

I will try this tonight. I had not seen it explained this well (for us users that may be a bit more dense than others) in the other threads on this subject. Hope it works!.
