An error occurred starting Vegas

uddenly Vegas has begun showing the error "An error occurred starting Vegas - the reason for the error could not be determined" and when I try to render to MPEG 2 and I press "Custom" to set the bitrate nothing happens. I can not reach the window for customising
I have tried to unistall and reinstall but no improvement ...
Can anyone help me find a solution?

I have the exact same problem. It was working fine, not sure what MS auto-update installed on my machine. Running WinXP Pro. Any help is much appreciated.

Really wish Terminal Services wasn't required...seems like a security risk.
