I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling and am using Version 3.0c ( Build 138 ).

Any clues ?

If you are running on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed, this is a known problem. Here is a link to a thread with the workaround:

I have this problem when I render to avi. Will this solve that problem also?
