An exploration of AMD drivers (Spoil : 21.8.2 are the fastest for me)

Leonce-Barbezieux wrote on 12/4/2023, 5:41 AM

This morning, I embarked on an experiment with drivers and performance in Magix Vegas 19, particularly in rendering. This had been on my mind for several days after reading on this forum about someone using version 22.5.1, just like me—reliable and perfect for working without issues.

However, I recalled that when I purchased my setup, rendering performance was more significant. So, I started downloading older versions of the drivers. Surprisingly, the first one I installed from August 2021 already outperformed my usual performance.

- With AMD VCE, drivers 22.5.1: Average speed 178 frames per second

- With AMD VCE, drivers 21.8.2: Average speed 205 frames per second

Surprising, isn't it?

So there's a 10% increase in performance with the newer driver? Seems possible. Did you look at the average after the render finished? It may change significantly as the render goes on.

There are also two benchmarks in my signature you are welcome to test with different driver versions.

Leonce-Barbezieux wrote on 12/4/2023, 6:18 AM

No, the 10% are from the oldest drivers.
And yes, it is after the render finished.

I did the benchmark 4k sample project long time ago. I'm in fifth position with the 2021 drivers.

Thanks for the comparison. Right now, I am using 23.11.1 drivers with VP21 Post. You don't have your computer specs listed in your Profile. It would be good if you put them in your Signature, like I and @RogerS has.

The downside of 23.11.1? NBFX Titler Pro 7 does not work. NBFX is aware of it. And there is a color shift (red/blue) in Post. But, AMD Software: PRO Edition 22.Q4 seems to fix that issue and work, minus NBFX TP7.

I've not done speed tests of the latest vs "old reliable" though.

I'm sorry, I thought you wrote AMD 23.8.2 as many people are using that as the best driver with VEGAS after 22.5.1.

Yes of course. I just did it.

No problem.

Just in case, i found this page with old amd drivers...

Thanks for adding the info in your Signature. Our systems are relatively similar. Same gen video card, same CPU. I'm Win 11 Pro, certainly not my favorite OS....

I'm cloning my c drive to a 4to nvme right now. But I will in one hour !
And I will try on a 6950XT to.

A friend brought me a 7900XTX to do some tests. But it was not as fast as my 6900XT for now.

so, with my 6900XT :

- With AMD VCE, drivers 22.5.1: Average speed 178 frames per second

- With AMD VCE, drivers 21.8.2: Average speed 205 frames per second

- With AMD VCE, drivers 23.8.2: Average speed 95 frames per second

- With AMD VCE, drivers 23.11.1: Average speed 100 frames per second

That is quite a wide range of results, with the old tried and true 22.5.1 being #2. But I am curious about the 21.8.2 drivers. I never tried those drivers, yet.

What are you rendering specifically?

I have been using the AMD Pro version 23.Q3.1 and have not had any issues with Boris FX and TP7. My PC is in my signature.

@james-ollick AMD Pro 23.Q3.1 isn't listed as the "latest" Pro driver for Win11. I only see 22.Q4 listed for the AMD RX 6700XT.

Downloaded and installed 23.Q3.1 and still no joy with TP7. The main interface will load, but once I click on Library, that is when things freeze. 22.5.1 worked that last time I tried it. I have TotalFX 360 Version 7.9.231018. Also, Titler Live 5 stalled at UI.

@james-ollick thanks for the 'heads up' on that driver. I am using Vegas Post 21, and in Vegas Effects, there was an issue with the red/blue color reversal. Using this driver, I don't see it any more.

But still no joy with TP7....

I just did some quick tests. I rendered a UHD 23.97 clip with no effects, with Magix AVC/ACC MP4>Internet UHD 2160P 23.976fps (AMD VCE). MediaInfo of the clip is at the bottom screen shot. I am back on 23.11.1 for testing purposes, though 22.5.1 works with Vegas and NBFX TP7 and Ignite Pro 5, while the other's don't. Ignite I can use in Vegas Effects, but TP7 is sorely missed. Neither the plugin or standalone fully load.

I tried to "PrtSc" at about 90-92% complete render to see hardware usage at that point.

Driver CPU GPU AVG FPS

21.8.2 73% 28% 39

22.5.1 76% 29% 57

23.11.1 77% 29% 56

PRO 23.Q3 74% 28% 40

One question : Do you have the smart access memory activated on your bios ?

If you want, you can send me your file with a wetransfer... I can test on my setup

Reyfox wrote on 12/5/2023, 8:34 AM

Sorry, I did not have SAM enabled. I did before testing to see if it did anything, but I have a dual boot computer. Win 10 on one drive, Win 11 on another. With SAM enabled, not all my drives appear when I use F12 during boot up where I can select which drive/device I want to boot from.
