I have a Sony digital 8 camcorder and would like to digitize an analog 8mm tape. Does anyone know of a way to capture the tape via firewire to my hard drive. I'm using vegas 5 and can capture digital tapes with no problem.
As far as I know digital 8 cameras should be able to play back regular 8mm tapes with no problem. We do it all the time with our Sony D8 camera, just put in the analog tape, hit play and capture through firewire. I'm not sure why that wouldn't be working for you.
Unfortunately Sony removed the 8mm/HI8mm playback feature (along with pass through) from some of the newer models of D8 camcorders.
You might be unlucky enough to have one of them :-(
If you're D8 is capable of "Pass-thru", the easy way to find out would be to turn it on in "VCR" mode and look at the menu. If you see the terms "TBC" and "DNR" and "A/D > DV", then you have pass-thru capabilities. If not, you can either try to find a used Dig8 that has it or look into getting a Canopus ADCV100 or 300.
