analog-to-digital conversion using a sony Dig8 camcoder---> Help

hmartine67 wrote on 3/30/2002, 10:19 AM
I have a Sony Digital 8 DCR-TRV340 camcorder, and I am trying to use the camera to "pass-through" analog video to digital conversion. Does anyone of you have this type of camera, or similar model, and have successfully done the analog-to-digital conversion??? If you do, please let me know how you did it. Transfering analog video through Dazzle DVC 80 aint cutting it. I am loosing frames like crazy.

Thanks a million in advance.

I'm using a Sony Digital-8 TRV240. It can play back Digital 8, Hi-8, and 8mm. Is your camera a step-up from mine?

How do you like your 240? I returned my 140 yesturday in search of a 240 now...

I like it alot compared to my older Sony analog camera. Just the fact that I can put my old tapes in and capture with the Firewire is nice. I was capturing analog with the DVC-80, and I had alot of dropped frames.

If you noticed I am 'using' this camera, I have to return it soon or the wife will leave me...(j/k). Kind of hard to hide a $600 purchase.

Yes, the model I have is one level up from yours. Both of them should be similar. Try the link abouve to see the difference amongts all the models.

So, have you tried the pass-through conversion process with your camera????

I just ordered the 340 today. If I get it before you get an answer, I'll let ya know ;-)

I've just been capturing my Hi8 tapes from the camera for now, have not done any pass-through.

Folks,
Just figured out how to do the pass through last night with my Sony Handycam TRV-120 Digital 8. I hooked up the firewire from the camera to the computer, turned on the camera to the VCR function, went to the camera menu and changed the DV output to on (see the handbook if you can't find this option, it's down a level on the menu), hooked up the VCR to the camera with the Sony supplied RCA jack cable which has the three (red, white, yellow) plugs on one end (hooked to the video out on the VCR) and the single input jack on the other (hooked to the camera). Put a tape into the VCR, hit play, then fired up Video Factory, went to the capture area, changed the properties to uncheck the controlv DV device, and voala, the video showed up in the preview window and I started capturing normally. What a cool feature. I can now convert all of my VHS tapes to DV with existing equipment. If my low level Handycam can do this, I'm betting your newer models can also. Good luck.

Ok Stewartr002, what you posted makes sense to me, hopefully it will work for me too. One question.... did you get a lot frames dropped when you used this procedure???? Very important for me to know.
Thanks

Absolutely none dropped. Hope it works for you.

It worked!!! Well, sort of.
I followed your instructions on how to set the camera for "pass-through", and it almost worked. I can not get the video, only sound. I used another application to capture the video, and it is very clear compared to how it used to be captured. I dont know how you figured this one out, but thanks a million. If I ever hit the lottery, you're on my list.
Now I got to work on my CD-R, which is beign recognized by VF2.
Thanks to all of those who responded.

Did you change the properties setting on VF to uncheck the "control DV device"? That way VF doesn't try to control the camera and just accepts what is coming in, both video and audio. Give it another try. You're only halfway there if you don't get the video too. It should work.

Where in VF do I find the option to uncheck the "control DV device; is it in the capture mode under the Video menu command?
It is amazing how that little camera can do such conversion... and to think that I was already saving money to buy a Sony media converter.... Thanks Sony.

Enable DV Device Control:

Go to video capture, Options, Preferences, and it should the the first item listed. If you're capturing a DV tape from the DV camera, this box should be checked. If you're using the camera as a pass-through converter, or using a stand-alone converter unit, this box should be unchecked.

Go it. I will try that tonight, when I get home.
Thanks

It worked!! No dropped frames or anything like it used to be, which was really bad. One last question before we close this case. By using the camera as a pass-through device, does that mean that the analog video from the VHS is in a digitized format...like video straight from my DV Camcorder????

Thanks a lot for helping solve this problem; your advices really helped many of us in getting good quality video from non digital sources, which I think deserves an A plus.

Happy rendering.

The video from the VHS is still analog. However, the file that you capture onto your drive has been converted into DV by the camera.

Or, for a shorter and more practically useful answer to what you meant to ask: yes.         ;)

I hope this works on my SONY TRV310! I will try it this weekend...
ANDREMIKE wrote on 4/3/2002, 8:22 PM
Ok I am trying it a little bit earlier....

I have Sony TRV-310 model camcorder.

Ok I got the video on my camcorder from the vcr by unplugging the Firewire cable. Do I have to record to tape first then play the tape back to capture it on my computer? I don't see an option to turn the DV to an output...... Maybe that came on the next model....
randy-stewart wrote on 4/3/2002, 11:36 PM
Andremike,
You camera is a newer version than mine so you should have the "pass through" capability. Hit the menu button on the camera, the options come up in the LCD display, the first option is VTR SET, just push the select/exec wheel on the back (your selector for the menu) and another set of options come up. The AV/DV Out is close to the bottom. It should be set to off now. Change it to on. Then your video and sound should display on your computer in the VF preview screen (assume it's running). Hope this breaks the code for you. This feature is really cool!

No I don't have this option. Oh well I guess I will have to put it on tape first then send it to my computer. No big deal... Maybe my camera needs a firmware upgrade....
