Take a look at the Canopus ADVC-100 for about $300 or less. You'll need an OHCI compliant firewire (1394) port in your computer and a cable to connect the converter to the port. Both of those can be had in the $25 range if you don't already have them.

I strongly second the vote for the Canopus ADVC-100 (thru a 1394 port). I have one of these and it is rock solid. To date I have not had one dropped frame. Seems like a big dollar to plunk down, but it lives up to its reputation.

If you need composite in/output, look at the DataVideo DAC-2, at about $559-650.

we tried the promax + option, full component in/out, sdi, aes audio etc...however we encountered lots of problems.

we have now brought a sony dsr-45 deck, which has component in/out etc and we use this to master to and to convert component footage to dv and vice versa (it has a tbc ref built in so output to beta is excellent !
