If you're using VP12, I think you just double click somewhere in the middle, if I recall.

You can turn off Expand Track Layers by right-clicking in the Track List area of your track. In my case I have the default VP 12 colors so this is blue, but your color may not be blue.

I didn't like this at first but now I find I cannot live without it.

It's difficult to quantify, but I feel that I can "see" more and it's easier to focus on single events with less visual clutter.

My suggestion is try some editing with it turned on and see if you become used to it. That's what I did. Maybe you will like it, maybe you won't. I don't think it actually does anything other than giving you a different visual.
