Animation AVI to Vegas settings

I have been playing with one of those animation programs (Caligari in my case)
and have not been able to get the smooth video motion we get from
cameras or from the big boys (PIXAR, Big Ideas, etc) movies.

Anyone else have a few tricks to pass on esp. the settings when encoding
to AVI?

I either get interlace jaggies or full frame "skips". (the position of an object
in the previous frame is visable) Frame smoothing (blur) helps but also
doubles or triples the rendering time.

I usually create uncompressed AVI files at 654x480, 24bit color, 30fps (the animation software i use won't allow me to specify 29.97), non-interlaced. After importing these into Vegas i disable resampling and Ctrl-drag to stretch them out 2 frames for each minute (to match 29.97, more or less). The images come through clear and smooth after rendering.
