Caligari's trueSpace 6 is a current version 3D program, but Caligari sells the previous version trueSpace 5 for a lower price and the version before that, trueSpace 4, for an even lower price. And, what is even better, Caligari is distributing the version before that, trueSpace 3.2, for free:

There are other free 3D programs, but I think trueSpace's user interface is probably easier to learn.

3D Studio MAX! I know Max and Maya and prefer Max for it's strong poly editing tools, good render (now with global illumination) and improved character setup and animation tools.

you could try www.computerarts.co.uk which reviews all 3D apps free/shareware and commercial.
