Anomoly in menu stucture

I just burned my first DVD with menu, which played beautifully on initial play, however I am experiencing an anomolous action upon replay under these conditions:

Played DVD in my home DVD player (attached to TV) and all worked fine.
Left DVD in player overnight with power off.
Powered player on and the DVD starts playing automatically without going to "dvd start" (the menu).
When I press the "menu" button on remote, my menu does not show for about 8 seconds. What does happen, is the screen is filled with a menu pointer graphic (an arrow), then the menu comes up as normal.

What can cause this?

Possibly useful info:
In my project overview window, the arrow graphic shows the "link" icon, but with a ? (question mark) above the icon. The link points to "most recent menu"

I assume you already know its a BAD IDEA to leave a DVD in a set top player when not playing. Some DVD players have 'auto start' enabled from a menu accessible from your DVD player remote control, the action you experienced may or not be the default action if you leave a DVD in the machine. This may, or may not result in expected results. I see the same thing if I forget and leave SOME CD's or DVD's in SOME PC's, but not all.
