Another DVDA Burn Problem

DCS Video wrote on 8/1/2005, 1:01 AM
I looked through the most recent posts, but I didn't see anything like this. I have been using DVDA 3.0 since it came out with no problems. However, the other day I burned a DVD that took some time to load in my DVD Player. When I inserted it again, it wouldn't load. The player gave me an error message about the DVD being dirty. I changed media brands and tried again. This time it worked. I forgot about it and went on. Tonight, I am having the same problem, but it doesn't seem to matter what brand I am using.

I rebooted the computer and rebuilt the project, but that didn't help. I thought maybe it was the player, so I tried other DVDs on it to check it out. All but one started right up. Some where videos I made with the same system and some where purchased movies. All worked. I thought maybe it was the DVD burner, so I switched it out. Nope, same problem.

Anyone heard of this before? Any suggestions?

Best would be if you tried those 'faulty' discs in another dvdplayer

Another trick that helped me once in a while was disconnecting the power of the standalone DVD player.

Does your burner have the latest firmware installed on it? Can the problem DVD's be read by the burner? When you changed out the burner, did you change to a different brand or to the same brand? When you switched media, did you change to a higher grade media or just another cheap media from a different source?

It sounds like you may have been burning marginal disks all along - usual reasons for this: poor quality media, poor quality burner and/or firmware issues in the burner. Some DVD players just won't reliably play burned disks (in many cases they weren't designed to do so, they were designed to play commercially stamped disks), so as suggested, does a different dvd player have problems with the problem disks?

Well, I don't know about firmware. I haven't been having any problems with my media, DVD player, software or DVD burner until just now.

My DVD burners are Sony external that came packaged with Vegas & DVDA. They have been working great ever since I got them.

My media is all brand name stuff Memorex, TDK, Sony and others. I'm not using any no name bulk DVDs. The DVD Player is a Sony and has been playing burned DVDs for about two years now without a problem.

I have tried using a different player (several actually) and they seem to balk at first, but then go on. This is a new accurrance as well.

My next test is to recreate the project in DVDA 2.0 and see if I have the same problem. That project will finish up shortly. I will test it and post the results.

Okay, the DVDA 2.0 Disk just finished and I tested it on that same player. It worked fine. It seems to be an issue with DVDA 3.

The first time this happened I was using 3.0, but thinking it might be a bug, I upgraded to 3.0b. So, I don't know what's going on.

I would understand if I were having the same problem since getting DVDA 3, but I have completed many projects without problems.

At this point I will just have to send a message to Sony and go back to DVDA 2.

Thanks for the help.

quick question: are you using RW's or just R's?

And.. did you try re-setting your prefences to default just to make sure something wasn't changed in there?

I'm using -R DVDs. I haven't changed my preferences back to default, but I just did another test with DVDA 2 and I have the same problem as I did with 3. Now, I think it has to be something with this computer. I'm running another test now, I will post the results when it's done.

Try using something else to burn. Download the trial version of CopyToDVD from www.vso-software.com - it's fully functional. Build the project in DVDA and then use CopyToDVD to burn it. If the burn from CopyToDVD has issues, then you at least know it's not an issue with DVDA and burning and can start looking at your computer and/or burner.

Unfortunately, based on some of the other things I've see with people installing Vegas 6, I don't think it's safe to assume that DVDA2 is still the same DVDA2 after installing DVDA3.

I transferred the mpg and ac3 files to a differnt computer, rebuilt the project using DVDA 2 and burned it using another Sony DVD burner. This machine doesn't have Vegas 6 or DVDA 3 on it and never has. The DVD loaded right up without a problem. It has to be something with that other computer, but I don't have time to mess with it any more. I have to get this project finished for a client. When I get the chance I will do some more testing and post the results.

Thanks for all the help!
