Another effect how-to question

Has anyone here seen the new Motorola RAZR cell phone commercials from Cingular? There's a certain 'text' effect they're doing that got my attention and I was wondering if anyone here has ideas how to do something similar with Vegas (or some other text or imaging product you can use with Vegas.)

Heavy sounding rock music is playing, and the text 'RAZR' is on the screen. Then suddenly a black cell phone comes blasting in from the left side of the screen, slicing the letters of 'RAZR' in two like a knife or sword, right through the middle! As the phone slices through the letters, the top of them float upwards, and the bottom part drifts downwards. The whole sequence can't be more than 2-3 seconds, but it looks SO COOL!

Does anyone have any ideas how to do something like this?

Thanks,

It's probably pretty straight forward in most any animation software. Vegas is not animation software.

That being said, you could create the parts of the letters as separate graphic images and put each on it's own track, then use 3D track motion to line them up and move them.

It can be done very easily using the Bezier Masking tool in Pan/Crop. Just put it on two tracks, mask out the top half in one and the bottom half in the other, and then move them as needed. Here's a quick example:

I appreciate your response. Unfortunately, I don't have any animation software.

Do you have recommendations for some fairly reasonably priced (less than 100 bucks) animation software?

Thanks,
