Another OT: Portable DVD Players

Does anyone have any experience with the portable DVD players with built-in monitors?

I took burned +R, -R DVDs and an SVCD disc into Future Shop and Best Buy and tried them in their players with varying degrees of success. Both stores seem to have either extremely low end or high end players (e.g. $250 - $1500)

The Mintek players would only partially play the discs and then randomly freeze while playing. These players were from $250 - $500. A Toshiba player played the -R and SVCD very well but was a bit pricey at $600 (don't remember if it played the +R or not).

Just as a side note, the discs that I was using have played without problems in any home player that I have tried them in (from an el-cheapo $50.00 Nova player to my dual format Sony player).

Any help, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Samsung player that I bought about a year ago. It's got a nice 9 1/2" WIDE screen, it's played everything I put in it... +r +RW -R -RW CD-R, MP3 CDs. They don't make this model any more, but you should do some research on-line.

Panasonic is usually a good choice. You can head over to some of the electronics companies web sites and get the specs on all the current crop of portables. I wouldn't reccommend the cheap low-end models as their screens are usually very ugly to look at.

there is a website called dvd dimystified (or something like that) and if i recall they list many dvd players and compatibilites with all the dvd formats, vcd and svcd. that should help selecting a model.

sometimes the cheaper models play more formats than the high priced ones. go figure!
