Any Books On How To Use VMS 10HD

Just purchased Vegas Movie Studio 10 HD Platinum Suite.

This is my first venture into video editing. I have just converted 25 old VHS tapes to DV AVI format and would now like to edit the files to enhance color, etc and add sound tracks.

I played some of the tutorial videos that came with the software and am over-whelmed at the capabilites of this software.

Are there any good books out there that can get me up to speed on video editing with VMS 10? The pdf User Manual does not get into color corrections, etc.

Thanks,

Bob

I doubt you'll find any books on VMS 10 yet, but if you do a google search for "vegas movie studio color correction" you should find some tutorials on the subject. They'll be for earlier versions but will apply to 10.

VMS does have a fairly high learning curve but stick with it. In addition to the videos you got, the Help > Show Me How... tutorials are very good for beginners.

Good luck and don't be shy about posting your questions here.

Hello Bob:

You can buy some excellent materials from VASST authored by Douglas Spotted Eagle (DSE). I have the book and DVD. The materials take you from knowing nothing to burning a DVD with menus, and includes training on keyframes and a few other cool things. They do not discuss color correction in depth, but do address many of the questions that we newbies tend to have.

The above materials are for 9.0, but much of it will pertain to 10.0. I still refer back to my book or DVD when I cannot remember how to do one thing or another. Apparently there is a book on 10.0 coming, but DSE is recovering from an injury right now (see the Vegas Pro forum for details) so we will have to wait on that.

VASST also offers a series of DVDs on Vegas Pro and these go into a lot more detail on subjects like color correction. Of course we will not have all the Pro featuers in Movie Studio, but we will have some of them and we could have a better understanding of how to use what we have. I think each DVD sells for around $40-$50. I'm actually thinking of buying the color correction DVD myself, but not until I exhaust all the free resources!

I hope that helps. Oh by the way, I am not affiliated with DSE, just a fan of his training materials.

Good luck with Vegas Movie Studio!

Just Google Vegas color correction.

Also when I first started w/ Studio Version 6 (I think) "Show me how" button was a great help. I also still use the "What's This Help"

I also purchased Vegas Pro Editing Workshop Book by Doug Spotted Eagle w/ a Borders 50% coupon + gift card. Worth it at 50% off but I wouldn't pay full price for it since it's written for Vegas Pro 9, you may not be able to use the tutorials and demo files on the CD. There's a section dedicated to color correction tools. The only thing about the book is that he pushes a lot of stuff for VASST which may or may not work in VMS 10. If it's only color correction your interested in maybe just go down to your local Boarders or Barnes & Nobles purchase a late and read that section. (:

Thanks for the tips.

Yes, I did view some of the YouTube clips on color correcting. That helped a lot. That kind of helped make the connection with the way I use Adobe Photoshop Elements to correct colors in still photos.

When correcting colors from old faded VHS tapes, is it possible to apply a global color correction to all the frames from the tape, or, do you have to do it frame by frame?

Yes, you can use color correction effects (or any effect) for the whole track and tweak certain parts of the video that need tweaking by cutting out the section, placing it on another track and applying the color corrector to that track or event.
