Any details about Experimental HEVC decoder?

fifonik wrote on 3/29/2025, 2:49 AM

I started quite a big project: dropped footage on timeline (Panasonic X1500 + GoPro + Pixel) & saved. Did not do anything else.

And then I faced "Out of Memory" issue when re-opening the project. Memory consumption goes up to max available and then VP crashed.

I enabled the "Experimental HEVC decoder" option and this is dramatically improved situation -- the project opened, memory consumption is stable while proxy are generating.

Are there any details what is the option doing and what should I look at to notice issues (if any)?
I searched the forum and people just suggesting to turn it on or off and see if it help. However, I'd like to find a bit more details if available.

Thanks.

P.S I have not tried to edit the project with the option enabled. Generating proxies atm.

What version of VEGAS are you using for this? 22.239?

Right click on media and see the properties. In 21 and 22, isn't it just the old so4compound decoder?

This is with your AMD GPU?
