IIs there such a thing as an external harddrive for laptops where
I do NOT need an external power source. I would like to edit on my
laptop using an external harddrive that does NOT need to be plugged into an AC source. Is there a good external harddrive that
I can just plug into my laptop or desktop via firewire?

Thanks.

I doubt it, I don't know of any laptops that have 6pin 1394 able to power the drive. You might get a tiny USB drive that will run off the laptop but that's hardly a step forward. Laptops have just enough power to run themselves, even if you could power a drive from them imagine what that would do for the battery life.

I got an external USB enclosure for a laptop hard drive that doesn't need external power:

There are other makes, such as:

Then get yourself a laptop hard drive, such as the 7200RPM, HITACHI Travelstar 7K60 60GB and you've got a nice external setup. Hitachi also makes an 80gig 5400RPM laptop drive. Of course, for video stuff, 60/80 Gig isn't much. But it may be enough for temporary stuff to be transferred latter.
