I tried at the DVDA Forum, but really need the powerhouses at this forum to chime in if you can. Please see the thread below. I'm at my wit's end! Thanks, Dave

I am using DVDA 4.0b. Everything is great with it until I click 'Make/prepare DVD' (or whatever that command is). Then, it locks up. The hard drive spins forever, and it doesn't recognize my DVD burner. Then, it does not shut down when I try to exit out, nor does it shut down when I close the process via the Windows Task Manager! Typically, I have to do a hard shut down and reboot.

I have a brand new Quad-Core Windows Vista Home Premium computer. Any help?

Ensure that Vista is updated to SP2 and has all of the latest updates. (Manually go to Windows Update and make sure you're getting every update.) Also, ensure that you have the latest Quicktime. Quicktime plays an important role in all PC-based video editing. It's probably also a good idea to go to your DVD burner's manufacturer's site and make sure you have the latest firmware and drivers. Beyond that, you should ensure that your hard drive is defragmented. You don't say if you're working off your C drive or an additional hard drive but, if working from another drive (such as an external drive) the formatting of the driver could also be a factor. (Drives are FAT32 from the factory, and this format has a file size limit.)

Finally, much depends on the sources and file formats of the video and audio in your project. Are these MPEGs exported from Sony Vegas or are they from other sources? And how long is your video?

I just updated to SP2 for Vista 64. I just updated my QT. My DVD burner works with Nero 9. Hard drive is defragmented. I use my one HD for OS and video files... have for years - no problems. It's formatted for NTFS. DVD I created in DVDA is from a single AVI file under 2 hours long (like I do for all my weddings). DVDA 4 works great, then still locks up when I go to prepare or make a DVD.

Have you looked up this problem in the Sony Support Knowledgebase yet? Is there a reason you haven't upgraded to the latest version of DVDA? You're working with an older version that might not be compatible with Vista 64. I use DVDA Studio 4.5d and it works very well with my Vista Home Premium 64.

If all else fails, the next step is to uninstall your DVDA and then reinstall. If it still doesn't work after that... then you're in no man's land.

Hi CVM
Your not alone, If you goto, Vista 64 bit & DVD Architect Pro 5b, just read some of the advice I got. Don't get me wrong, it was fare. I went into MSCONFIG & stopped some programs. Nothing worked.
Lets just face it. IT'S NOT VISTA 64bit COMPATIBLE. There I said it.

I'm hesitant to upgrade... until usually a year after the program comes out.

I've already used the 30-day trial of VV9 and the latest DVDA a month ago. But I DIDN'T burn a DVD with it. So, I blew it. All I want to know before I buy, is will the latest VV and DVDA recognize my drive.

Is there ANYWAY to get the trial to work for 10 minutes more after the trial period is over???? I don't want to upgrade for hundreds of $$$ if the problem ISN'T DVDA but my system somehow.

Thoughts? Thanks.

did you try just preparing in DVDA (without burning) and then burning with Nero?
CVM wrote on 7/3/2009, 3:50 PM
When I click Make DVD and go to prepare... it hangs too! After 15 minutes, SOMETIMES it lets me prepare, but most times it doesn't. Obviously, there is some issue.

CVM, I don't think you're going to find a solution to this problem.
I run Vegas on a few different computers at work (pre-configured by our IT dept.) and, in all the years of doing so, never had a problem with any of them until this year.
On one machine (XP-Pro), I have a similar problem.
IT will eventually get past the Prepare screen but has taken as long as 1/2 hr. to do so.
I searched the DVDA forum and only found one person with the same problem.
Unfortunately he never found a fix for the problem either :-(
What I do now is render the MPEG-2 & AC-3 files from Vegas and bring them to another computer to do the DVD prep & burn.
I know it's a PITA but, in the absence of a solution, this is my workaround.

Is your burner a SATA burner? You might need an updated SATA driver for your motherboard. I had the same problem.

It's an Optiarc DVD+-RW AD7200S. The web says it is a SATA drive. It came pre-installed with my Dell XPS 430 just a few months ago.

Do you think if I buy an external burner (like a Sony), and plug it in via USB 2.0 my problems will be solved? I'm dead in the water now.

If you want to see if an external burner will work -- apologies 'cause this will sound bad -- run over to some place like the closest best buy or walmart & pick one up... If it doesn't work you'll be 100% honest when you return it. [B/Buy has a coupon out currently for some % off].

Hey JJKizak I've got a Samsung SATA DVD burner thats giving me a weird error "f:\source\sonic3\release\DVDR......." Since I don't have an F: drive I did a HEX search and found that 288 DLL and EXE files have this reference in them. I have posted this on the DVDA forum but theres not much activity there.

The whole DVDA burn process goes well untill it starts to actually burn then I get the error. I did a firmware update from the Samsung site but that didn't help. I'll check if there is a SATA update for my X58 board at Gigabyte.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't think about the SATA drive driver.

My X38 board from Gigabyte had the problem. They have a slug of drivers and it is very difficult to select the proper one. Once I had the correct driver everything ran slicker than camel snot on a doorknob.

Well don't make me beg. Which slick slug is it then?

Well my board is different then yours but just get the one with the latest date and try that.
