Any idea as to why my volume levels are different?

Hey Guys,
I created 2 MPEG2s/AC3s in V4 with the volume levels just under 0 db; for some reason one is playing substanyially lower than the other in DVDA. Any ideas as to why?
TIA,
Randy

The dynamic range for audio for AC3 is set to film as default. This sets the general sound level lower to allow for the larger range required by film. You can modify the dynamic range by checking custom when you render to AC3 and selecting music template. You can also set the normalization up closer to zero. If I do music on DVD set my own parameters for dynamic range.

Your peaks are a bit high, in my opinion. There isn't the headroom we had in analog so if you look at default max settings for pro video gear, Broadcast BetaSX/IMX and DVCAM default at -20; prosumer like Canaon XL1s -12. I generally set my level to minus 12. Our AVID Media COmposer is of the same persuasion.

my 2 cents.

Thanks guys,
Peter I agree that close to zero db is definitely too high but I was trying to compensate to get it up to the first one which I discovered later was a .wav.; which explains why the wobblyboy is dead on. I wound up rendering the 2nd one to .wav so that I could meet my deadline but I'll remember this next time.
Thanks again guys,
Randy
