Any point in buying a SD NTSC CRT now?

I'm still doing primarily SD DV editing right now. I have some money for investing in new gear coming in shortly, but not enough to get me into HD in any serious way just yet. So, I figure, I'll focus on upgrading the computer and editing end of the spectrum, and worry about the HD camera later. I'd like to do this in a way so I'm ready for HD when I get the money for a new camera.

Meanwhile, though, I am getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of proper color calibration controls on my cheapo SD NTSC monitor. I'm really, really tempted by the JVC TMH-150CGU production monitor ($500 at B&H), but part of me wonders if it's stupid to spend money on a standard definition monitor at this point. I've already looked, and there are no comparable HD monitors I can afford that would have color calibration.

What would you guys do?

PS: BTW, this is mainly a hobby, not a business for me, so I do not have a guaranteed income stream from video work that would let me pay for an major upgrade to HD-everything.

What about an HD CRT? I was looking at this as a possible cheap way to HD monitoring.

I'm pretty sure it can display SD quite well.

At least get a 16:9 capable monitor.
Bob.

Brian,
I JUST bought one of these two months ago after doing exactly what you have been doing for years. It was one of the best things I have purchased. It is so much easier to color correct with this. I don't regret it one bit. Grazie owns one too and loves it.
I bought it from G&G Technologies in Secaucus, New Jersey for $470. I just paid the tax because I picked it up myself.

Oddly enough, John, it was yours and Grazie's discussion about this monitor on this forum that turned me on to it!

Are you planning on getting into HD any time soon? If so, do you think you'll still have a use for this beast after you take the plunge into high-def?

I don't often have this opportunity to spend this kind of money on gear. There's a lot on my wish list, and I'm breaking into a cold sweat trying to decide which particular gadgets to buy with my limited budget!

Thanks for the suggestion, jkrepner. Looks sweet, but it still doesn't have color calibration controls. So, that leaves me basically where I am now, just with more pixels.

I'm really looking for something with Phase, Chroma, Underscan, and Blue Gun controls.
