Any way to adjust color of video?

I'm getting started with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD. I'm far more familiar with image editors than video editors. That means I'm used to adjusting color contrast, boosting brightness and such. Is there any way to do this with video? The video I'm working with now is a little dark. If it was an image, I'd just brighten it up.

There are a host of video effects you can use in Vegas. Please note that i'm not familiar with the studio version so some of these may not be available.

Color Curves: gives you a very flexible gamma line. drag up at the top to increase highlights or at the bottom to increase shadows. Add more points for finer control. This is probably the best choice for brightness and contrast.

Color Corrector: one of the sliders is for gamma. It's only a single control, but it will easily adjust brightness. While you're here you can also control many other aspects of color.

Levels: allows you to adjust the black level up or down and the white level up or down, smoothly stretching the contrast range in between.

Any of these should get you where you want. Color curves is the easiest for fine control. Color Corrector is the simplest and most powerful. Levels is a much more technical adjustment designed more for mismatches in the color levels between various digital formats rather than fixing image brightness.

That's just what I needed to know. Color Curves is only available in Vegas Movie studio HD Patinum, the version I'm using. Thanks for the information!

The AAV Colorlab free plugin is another option.

Depending on your version of VMS, you may also have some included NewBlue FX which includes color correction and white balance.
