Anybody try this yet?

I'm trying to find the best way to archive my files for future reference. I was thinking .avi was the only way to keep a file on disk.

I tried saving a file to mpeg-2 (dvd ntsc). The playback was a little jerky but I tested it by rendering to .avi and watched it as I printed to tape and I could see no difference in the quality compared to .avi. This was encouraging since the mpeg-2 file was about one fifth the size of the .avi.

I'm a newbie so I was wondering if anybody else does this?

I archive back to DV tape from my finished .avi. While you may not notice the difference in the mpg and avi, there is a huge difference. I always keep origninal DV tapes and final edited versions dumped to DV tape in case I need to make changes at a later date.

If you have the time code of all your bits when you captured, you could just recapture the bits again your project will come to life...
