It sounds as though you may be using two tracks instead of one - the most common way of creating transitions is to overlap two events on the same track, which creates a cross fade, then dropping the required transition on the overlap.

(To see a "single" track as A and B, which it really is, right click on the Track header and select Expand Track layers.)
