Via chipsets can be troublesome with 1394- lots of software

I get this same behavior and I have an Intel motherboard. I haven't tried disabling the USB yet, but that seems like a lot of effort to go to to print to tape. I'm about to build a new computer. Any suggestions for motherboards/chipsets that work well?
