anyone found any bad DVD writing drives?

I took a look at the (short) list of supported DVD writing drives that SoFo has listed on the site, and was wondering:
Since I'm about to take the plunge and buy a drive on a college student's budget, the only think more important to me than price is whether or not the drive will actually work.
So. Has anyone out there run into any drives that DON'T work with Vegas 4?

Stick with the Pioneer A-05 drive, or wait a month and get the A-06 drive, it is the most solid DVD burner on the market.

What about the Sony DRU-500-AX or the new DRU-510A? The Sony gives you much more format flexibility.

Even if DVDA doesn't recognize a specific DVD writer, which I think would be doubtful, you can still save the finished DVD as Video and Audio TS folders on your hard-drive, then use whatever burning software came with your drive (usually RecordNow or Nero) to burn the DVD from there. This is the way I like to do it especially if I'm making several copies (and you can test it with your DVD player on the computer before you burn it).

I agree though that your best bet overall would be to go with a Pioneer A05, since they're the ones who "pioneered" DVD-R.

Don't be afraid of DVD+R, however. It's probably the superior format for a few minor reasons (although -R and +R are equally compatible with existing DVD Players). Investigate things on the web before you buy, check out user forums for issues and you shouldn't have any problem with either format.

P.S. Your original question was about Vegas 4 being compatible with DVD Writers. It has nothing to do with them. What it will do is render your finished movie to the MPG2 format. You then take it into a DVD authoring program like DVDA to create the actual DVD that will be burned to your DVD Writer.
