The Azden mic is better than any camera's stock mic. I use the SGM-2X on my SONY DSR-250 and PD-150 and it sounds great. Azden makes a good mic that is a real value. It's not Sennheiser quality but it's close enough for the money. I also use their lavalier mic. Great for interviews and general sound recording.
I'm a former musician and have a fairly decent understanding of audio, having spent some time in recording studios. It would be easy for me to spend a TON of money on very high quality mics...my ego would love it.
But 99% of my customers will play back the DVD or VHS tape they buy from me on household electronics...and they won't be able to tell the difference between Sennheiser or Azden.
I currently have a Shure UT series UHF lavalier wireless mike and I have to use a lot of noise reduction software to get it to sound like anything decent. Is there a better wireless at a reasanable price? Would a Rycote windjammer help the Shure? I appreciate your input since you are audio savey.
Have it and use it often. I find it very good in many situations. I use it on my GL-1 and also on a boom pole. Not a top of the line mike, but like most things the middle ground is often better.

I just bought the Azden SGM-2x for my Panasonic AGX-V100. It works great. My only problem is that I had to make some adjustments because it was too long and appeared in my shots.
>>Does anyone know if the AZDEN sgm- 1x shotgun mic works well with the Gl2.
For about the same money (+/- $200.00 US), I prefer the Audio Technica AT835b, it's quieter, more sensitive, has a wider dynamic range and will take hotter sound levels than Azden's 1x and 2x. Also, I've used (and abused) AT shotguns for years and have yet to destroy one. If you can afford it, Sennheiser's shotguns are also quite good as are AKG's, Shure's and Shoeps' (very pricey though). And finally, to respond to a question I see here pretty often - no, windscreens (blimps or muffs) will not decrease the amount of hiss you get from noisy wireless devices or from camera mounted microphones. Windscreens are only designed to prevent excessive air pressure from hitting the microphone's diaphragm, and therefore overloading the mic's capsule which causes dropouts in the signal). I hope this helps.
Anyway, the Azden SGM-2 has great versatility. It can be used as an omnidirectional 8" mike and, with the 8" shotgun extension barrel it is truly a supercardiod (very focused) mike. Great value for the money.
Are any of the mics discussed so far good as camera mounted mics? I have a Sony DCR TV20 and would like better sound, but I heard that the noise (vibration) from the camera can come through the mic, and that some require some sort of shockmount between the hotshoe and the microphone.
I read a dv.com review of the Tinymike and Tinymix from ambient, and they gave it 4 stars out of 5. Tinymix comes with a built-in shockmount, and the mic fits on the mixer. A picture is at http://www.coffeysound.com/store/ambient.html. Any thoughts about this as a good buy?

Not that you'd want an omni for this application - don't get me wrong, the SGM-2X is a respectable mic, its a good a value IMHO (considering you get two capsules with it) - but still, it's not as quiet or as sensitive as the AT835B. My philosophy is try them all and buy the one(s) you really like. You might end up like me, many different location mics (and growing), but you'll never want for the right tool when you need it. :-)
shawnm - I'm starting to come round to your way of thinking. Canon XM2 here. Excellent on board mic . . .but, for interviews, I'm using Senni ME66 single-channel super-cardioid/lobar mic with a relatively narrow field - it rejects off-axis sound - with K6 power module. I've piped this into one of the XLR connections on the MA300 Canon adaptor. HOWEVER, this knocks out the onboard ambient mic . . .sooooo . . need to have an ambient mic on XLR2. Hmmm . . . have to speak to my cheque book.
