Patches? Yes, of course. Eventually.

There may be some other fixes ahead in the queue, after Bill Gates's live demo of it crashed twice this week.

This is a REALLY complex and huge piece of software.

Do you want to have fun or get work done?
For fun get XP Media Center, for work get XP Pro.

I have Media Center XP 2004. I havent upgraded to the new version because frankly it does what I need. I have had no major issues with any codecs using MCE. Then again, I only use what I need and I stay the heck away from those codec packs that are floating around the web.

Sony's DV codec works flawlesly for me under MCE as do Nero Digital and Xvid.

What codec are you concerned about having issues with?

Thank you both for the responses. It's going to be for fun. But serious fun. I'll describe the set-up that I have planned:

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with a 320GB RAID-0 harddrive, 1 GHz RAM, NVidia GeForce 6800 256MB graphics card, and of course, XP Media Center (it's either the 2004 or 2005 version. I'll know when I unpack it, which should be soon because my kids are circling like a pack of ravenous wolves).

My inputs will be a Yamaha piano with Disklavier system, via USB. I'll probably be working on the resultant MIDI files in some app other than Vegas, since I have read that Vegas is not MIDI-friendly. My video input will be a digital camcorder (plain old DV, not HD). I'd like to set up a dual-monitor system, and the GeForce 6800 card works with multiple monitors, though I don't know how well dual-monitor set ups work with XP Media Center. Vegas will be for bringing my homemade video and audio together.

I'm getting the impression from others that high-end video editing is problematic in XP Media Center, but very reliable in XP Pro. But that impression may be due to problems that some people experienced with earlier versions of XP Media Center. I know nothing about Media Center other than what I've read online the past couple of days. I ordered it with the Dell a week ago simply because I thought the name implied that the O/S was tweaked for video and audio buffs. But it sounds like it is really designed for the very casual hobbyist, not for anything serious. If you have anything to add to all this, I'm all ears! Thanks!
