application to capture computer screen to video?

I'm working on a "How-to" video where I need to show an application on the screen and demonstrate tasks. Is there an application that will capture a computer screen to AVI or some other video format. I would rather not point a camera at the screen as the results always look bad to me.

Camtasia is one program that gets recommended a lot for this purpose.
